A. Watch your Kids While Watching TV
Television becomes one of the most important devices which takes place in almost houses. It can unite all members of the family as well as separate them. However, is it important to know what your kids are watching? The answer is, of course, absolutely "Yes" and that should be done by all parents. Television can expose things you have tried to protect the children from, especially violence, pornography, consumerism and so on.
Recently, a study demonstrated that spending too much time on watching TV during the day or at bedtime often cause bed-time disruption, stress, and short sleep duration. Another research found that there is a significant relationship between the amount of time spent for watching television during adolescence and early adulthood, and the possibility of being aggressive.
Meanwhile, many studies have identified a relationship between kids who watch TV a lot and being inactive and overweight. Considering some facts mentioning above, protect your children with the following tips:
• Limit television viewing to one-two hours each day
• Do not allow your children to have a TV set in their own bedrooms
• Review the rating of TV shows which your children watch
• Watch television with your children and discuss what is happening in the show
It is undeniable that achieving good grades is an important goal in education. However, students should not limit their learning experience to simply chasing high marks on their report cards. Focusing solely on grades can restrict their intellectual growth and hinder the development of essential skills. Therefore, it is highly recommended that students also engage in academic competitions like the National Science Olympiad (OSN), which offer deeper learning opportunities and foster critical thinking.
Firstly, when students focus only on grades, they tend to memorize information for exams without truly understanding the material. This shallow learning approach might help them score well in the short term but does not equip them with a strong foundation for future challenges. On the other hand, academic competitions like OSN provide students with complex problems that require deep analysis, logical reasoning, and creativity. By participating in these competitions, students are encouraged to understand the subject matter more thoroughly, which ultimately leads to a more meaningful education.
Additionally, grades alone do not necessarily prepare students for real-world problems. School exams usually test knowledge in a predictable, formulaic manner. To truly thrive in the future, students need to develop skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and independence—skills that are essential for success in any field. OSN challenges students to think critically and work through difficult, unfamiliar problems, which helps them build these vital skills. This exposure to complex and novel problems prepares them for a variety of situations, both academically and professionally.
Moreover, focusing only on grades can lead to extrinsic motivation, where students study merely to earn rewards such as praise or recognition. This kind of motivation can be short-lived and may not sustain their enthusiasm for learning. In contrast, the experience of participating in a competition like OSN fosters intrinsic motivation—a genuine interest in the subject and a desire to excel. This internal drive is much more powerful and enduring, encouraging lifelong learning and intellectual curiosity.
Therefore, it is clear that students should not confine themselves to just achieving high grades. Instead, they should take advantage of opportunities like OSN to broaden their academic experiences and develop critical skills that are essential for their future success. By balancing both grades and participation in academic competitions, students can achieve a more well-rounded and fulfilling educational journey. Thus, I strongly urge all students to embrace these opportunities and strive for a deeper, more meaningful understanding of their studies.
